“Discover the Timeless Charm of Lara Parker’s Iconic Role as Angelique in ‘Dark Shadows'”

Lara Parker, renowned for her portrayal of the witch Angelique in the ABC gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows,” peacefully passed away in her sleep on October 12 at her residence in Los Angeles’ Topanga Canyon neighborhood, as confirmed by her daughter. She was 84 years old.

From 1967 to 1971, this Memphis native graced our screens as the central antagonist, Angelique Bouchard, in “Dark Shadows.” This enthralling series unfolded in the fictional town of Collinsport, Maine, and revolved around the Collins family, the town’s founding dynasty. The narrative takes flight when Barnabas Collins (played by Jonathan Frid) spurns the enamored Angelique following a brief affair, oblivious to her mystical powers.

In a fit of rage, Angelique embarks on a path of revenge and places a sinister curse upon Barnabas, transforming him into a vampire. This curse sets the stage for a tumultuous love-hate relationship that spans centuries.

Parker’s portrayal of Angelique concluded with her character’s demise, but she remained an integral part of the series, returning in the role of Catherine Harridge Collins, a member of the Collins family.

Following the conclusion of the daytime serial, Parker ventured into the world of cinema and television. Her work included the film “Save the Tiger” (1973), the drama series “Jessica Novak” (1981), and her appearances in two “Doctor Mabuse” films in 2013 and 2014.

With a master’s degree in creative writing from Antioch University, Parker not only graced the screen but also delved into the realm of fiction, expanding the universe of “Dark Shadows.” She penned four books: “Dark Shadows: Angelique’s Descent” (1998), “Dark Shadows: The Salem Branch” (2006), “Dark Shadows: Wolf Moon Rising” (2013), and “Dark Shadows: Heiress of Collinwood” (2016). In addition to her literary achievements, Parker starred in the film “Night of Dark Shadows” (1971), which drew inspiration from the series, and made a cameo appearance in the 2012 film “Dark Shadows,” a remake of the original TV series featuring Johnny Depp as Barnabas and Eva Green as Angelique.

In a 2013 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Parker disclosed that prior to her role as Angelique, she had primarily played “heroine” characters. However, her co-star, Jonathan Frid, encouraged her to shed her tears and embrace the role of the villain, teaching her that she could be ruthless, strong, and resilient. Parker reflected, “That made me realize I had a really good character to play who could be ruthless and strong and resilient.”

Lara Parker is survived by her second husband, Jim Hawkins, her children Caitlin, Rick, and Andy, as well as a beloved grandson. Her legacy in the world of entertainment and literature will be cherished and remembered by many.
